叙事一气呵成，在外闯荡的马戏团团长没有干出一番事业，无法面对妻儿，更无法保障跟随的情人，当拒绝妻子的接济，目睹情人的出轨，被情敌暴揍种种羞辱后，男主失去自杀的勇气，最终以一头不听话的狗熊被枪杀而宣告了男主的软弱无力。伯格曼这几部影片都在实些男女情爱的各种悲剧，而虚写故事背后男性感情弱势的凄凉，也许是他那个时期敏感失意的写照吧。
